5 Ways to Increase Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem - Jack Canfield

5 Ways to Increase Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem

Do people with high self-confidence achieve greater success?
“I need to increase my self-esteem” is a statement I hear often from my students. Their belief is that once their self-confidence and self-esteem is higher, they’ll be able to achieve more and become greater successes.
While it’s true that a high self-esteem can assist you in creating the life you dream of, the mistake most people make is how they think about self-esteem. It’s not a thing to be increased or decreased, although that is the common terminology. Instead, self-esteem is a verb; it’s the process of esteeming yourself.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, esteem means “to set a high value on: regard highly and prize accordingly.”
In other words, the process of boosting your self-esteem starts with deciding that you are valuable and treating yourself as such.

5 Good Habits to Build Great Self-Esteem

1) Believe in Yourself

The first step in creating greater self-esteem is to believe in yourself. It’s your responsibility to take charge of your own self-concept and your beliefs – including belief in your worth, your talent, your abilities, and your potential.

2) Identify 9 Major Successes

Research has repeatedly shown that the more you acknowledge your past success, the more confident you become in taking on and successfully accomplishing new ones. A simple way to start this process is to take an inventory of your major success. Divide your life into three time periods – from birth to 15, 16 to 30, and 31 to 45. The list three major successes from each time period.
Divide your life into three time periods – from birth to 15, 16 to 30, and 31 to 45. Then list three major successes from each time period.
To really convince yourself that you’re a successful person who can continue to achieve great things, keep going with your list.
See if you can identify 100 or more of your life successes.

3) Keep a Victory Log

Recall and write down your successes each day. This will log them into your long-term memory, enhancing your self-esteem and self-confidence. Whenever you need a boost of self-confidence, reread what you have written. Keeping and referring to your victory log keeps you focused on your successes instead.

4) Display Success Symbols

What you see in your environment has a psychological impact on your moods, attitudes, and behavior. Surround yourself with awards, pictures and other objects that remind you of your successes. Create a special place in your home – such as a hallway, shelf or even the top of your refrigerator – to display your symbols. This will subtly program you to see yourself as someone who has consistent successes in life.

5) Keep Your Agreements

One of the most commonly overlooked ways to boost self-esteem is to keep your word. Every agreement you make is to yourself, ultimately, even those that involve other people. Your brain registers agreements as commitments. If you don’t follow through, you learn to not trust yourself. You lose integrity and faith in your ability to produce a result. Don’t undermine your sense of personal power – keep your commitments.

Increase Your Capacity to Take a Risk

To understand the importance of esteeming yourself, imagine you were playing poker. If you have 10 chips and I have 200 chips, who do you think will play more conservatively?
You will, of course, because the stakes are higher for you. Two losing bets of five chips each would put you out of the game. I, on the other hand, could lose five chips 40 times before I was out.
Your self-esteem is like a stack of poker chips. The higher it is, the more willing and able you are to take the risks that will lead you to greater success.
Use the ideas shared in this article to create and maintain the high levels of self-esteem you need to get where you want to be.

Simple Ways To Calm the Storms In Your Life by Melissa Chu

Do your moods ever feel like a roller coaster?
One second, you’re on top of the world. The next, you’re down in the dumps.
It only takes the smallest of events to change your mood completely. For instance, receiving a compliment from a friend makes your day, while getting one piece of criticism can destroy it completely.
Many of us tend to react strongly to things that happen around us, regardless of whether or not they’re within our control. Unfortunately, this can lead to exhaustion, poor mental health, and hurt your ability to make long-term decisions. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to change the way you perceive what happens to you in life. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t get what you want (because sometimes what you want changes). And when you do have a reason to celebrate, it’s simply a step on your journey.
Setbacks and victories are a part of life, not something your whole life is contingent on.

So let’s look at these 10 ways you can bring peacefulness into your life:

1. Look at the big picture.

Sometimes we think that if something doesn’t go our way, our world will come crashing down. Maybe you’ve experienced a conflict with someone, or you’re anxiously waiting to hear back about a job position.
At the time, it might feel like everything is resting on this one thing. You’re so fixated on one opportunity that you become blinded to all the rest.
The world is a big place – there are many opportunities out there if you go out and look for them. Something may seem like a big deal at the time, but one day you’ll look back and realize it didn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Not matter what happens, you’ll be okay.

2. Go for a walk outside.

My head always clears up when I go outside for a walk. Maybe it’s the boost in energy, the sound of birds chirping, or a change in environment.
Whether it’s a sunny spring morning or a cool winter afternoon, I get a better perspective of the issues in my life and feel refreshed after a walk.

3. Breathe in, breathe out.

When we stress out, we tend to breathe quickly. Our breathing and anxiety levels form a vicious cycle, where they influence one another and lead us into a downward spiral.
If you find yourself doing this, stop. Inhale slowly through your nose, pause for a moment, and then breathe out, while allowing your shoulders to drop.
Repeat as needed.

4. Understand the other person’s point of view.

I used to feel critical or angry when someone made a decision that didn’t seem to make sense. But when I saw their situation through their eyes, I became more understanding.
Before you judge, try to understand first. It’s easy to make snap decisions or draw a conclusion when we only know one side of the story.

5. Practice self-care.

The other day, a friend’s picture of herself at the spa made me realize that I don’t actively make enough time for myself. We spend most of our day running errands or doing work for others, but rarely do we sit down and enjoy a moment for the sake of it.
It doesn’t even have to be a day at the spa. Making time for yourself can simply mean sitting down and listening to your favorite music, catching up on a book, or reflecting on your favorite moments of the day. You deserve that time on your own!

6. Dump out your worries.

Worries do no good for us. They’re unproductive, raise blood pressure, and out of our control. Yet, we can’t help ourselves.
Get rid of your worries before you go to bed. Try writing them down, mentally tossing them away, or remind yourself that life is full of possibilities if one doesn’t pan out.

7. Acknowledge life’s twists and turns.

As much as we resist, life is unpredictable. It goes in different directions from what we expect, and leads us to destinations we couldn’t foresee.
The randomness of life is both amazing and frightening. When I recognized this fact, I started to appreciate the magic of serendipity. I had a greater sense of peacefulness in my actions.

8. Share your experiences.

When you share good news, you multiply the positivity. When you share sad news, you divide the sorrow.
At least, that’s how I feel when I have something to share. Talking about something that happened to you or listening to a friend can help both of you to connect and grow together.

9. Practice gratitude.

I’m trying not to take so many things for granted. Now, I make an effort to say “thank you” on a regular basis to the people, events, and surroundings that help me become a better person.
Someone gave you (unsolicited) advice? “Thank you.” A hardship in your life showed you a valuable lesson? “Thank you.” That’s all you need to say.

10. Keep going.

So you faced a setback. You just received a rejection letter. Or, you finally broke through an obstacle and made a step forward in your progress at last.
Regardless of whichever one it is, keep moving forward. Keep working towards where you want to go. There’s no limit to how much you can learn and grow as a person.
We all experience moments that bring out emotions of joy, sadness, and everything in between. But when you feel exhausted from constantly thinking and worrying about everything, take a step back and evaluate how you respond to events.
Feeling peaceful is about appreciating the randomness of life. It’s about doing what we can while enjoying the process.
When you approach life’s challenges with a calm, collected head, you can tackle whatever comes your way.

8 Ways to Be More Productive With the Help of Meditation by Szymon Pelechowicz

What would you give for more time in your life?
The ability to do more in less time has always been a fundamental human desire. Because of that, it can seem counterintuitive to develop a meditation practice.

You already have trouble making time to sort the laundry, make dinner and exercise. And you think you should make time to meditate?
Bear with us as we explain why this makes sense.
Here are 8 ways in which meditation can actually make you more productive and also improve the quality of your life.

1. Meditation Improves Your Focus and Memory

You may think that studying, learning and working can all help keep your brain working optimally throughout your life. However, sometimes our brain grows when we’re not bombarding it.
Experts say that technology may be harming our attention and capacity to store information.
Meditation can help with that.
One study looked at test scores earned over time by participants who took a mindfulness and meditation class versus participants who took a nutrition class. The researchers found that the group that learned how to meditate showed improvements in scores on several types of tests.
Meditation alters the physical structure of the brain. The size of the blood vessels in the brain increases and more blood is transported to the brain. The cerebral cortex also thickens.

2. Meditation Helps You Live Longer

With more years in your life, you can be more productive, right?
Meditation can add years to your life. A University of Pennsylvania study found that repeating a mantra creates vibrations that disconnect the mind from the body. This allows the body to become more relaxed and evenly regulated.
Try this guided meditation to elevate your vibration.
People who meditate have also been found to have more telomerase than those who don’t. Telomerase is an enzyme that keeps chromosomes from deteriorating, which is one cause of aging. When your DNA is protected, the rate at which you age slows down.
People with higher telomerase levels also tend to have better psychological wellbeing. When you’re balanced psychologically, you’re less stressed. Research has consistently shown that stress can be a factor in health problems like heart disease, obesity, and stroke.

8 Ways to Be More Productive While Using Meditation

3. Meditation Gives You a Break That Helps You Work Less

You may be thinking, “What? Working less isn’t increasing my productivity.”
Many people don’t take the time to meditate simply because they feel more productive when they’re working hard. However, leisure time researchers say that multitasking and working longer hours don’t necessarily indicate that you’re getting more done.
In fact, one of the downfalls of working all the time is that you don’t achieve more than someone who works in a more focused mindful manner. You also don’t get to take advantage of leisure time, because you feel like you’re always working.
Taking time out of your busy day to meditate can help you get all of your work done in a more efficient manner, leaving you with more time to enjoy life too.

4. Meditation Organizes Your Mind

We often run through life without stopping to organize our thoughts. When our minds become filled with so much information, we can feel confused, overwhelmed or foggy. This doesn’t help us with our productivity.
Just like your computer works more efficiently after you defragment it, so do you. Meditation allows you to organize the information in your brain, creating more space for learning and processing information.

5. Meditation Keeps You From Procrastinating

Be honest; how much time do you spend scrolling through social media? You tell yourself that you’re just hopping on to check one thing, and you spend the next hour blindly scrolling. This type of procrastination takes a toll on your productivity.
Instead of doing those activities that suck away your time, what if you meditated? You would probably spend less time meditating than you do wasting time in other ways. Also, you would become more aware of the time that you do have and the ways in which you can realistically spend it.

6. Meditation Encourages “Right Thought”

The idea of right thought comes from the Buddhist principle that meditation creates clear intentions. This allows you to see your path and move through it more clearly, preventing you from wasting time on activities or even thought processes that are unproductive.

7. Meditation Teaches You To Push On Through

Meditating isn’t always easy. It can be challenging to rid yourself of the fluster of thoughts that crowd your brain at any given moment. Developing a consistent meditation practice takes patience and perseverance.
Over time, however, you end up learning how to breathe through the difficult situation. You understand how to regulate your breathing and better control your mental and emotional responses to stressful circumstances. It helps you get through other demanding situations in your life with more ease and grace.

8.Meditation Makes You More Creative

Meditation allows you to think more flexibly. What should you do when life doesn’t go as planned? Instead of letting obstacles get in your way, you can come up with more creative solutions when your ways of thinking allow for flexibility.
When you’re stuck in a particular way of thinking, you don’t tend to move forward. The creative thinking that is encouraged by meditation helps you get through life with more ease and efficiency.

But what does being more productive really mean?

Before you trade in your three cups of coffee for a new meditation practice, stop to consider what productivity really means to you. Do you have to do so much laundry?
Most of us have way too much on our to-do lists, and the majority of what we hope to accomplish isn’t going to fulfill us or change our lives significantly.
Productivity doesn’t have to mean working more. Productivity doesn’t have to mean never taking breaks or never relaxing.
Productivity should be about using your mind efficiently and creatively in order to live your life in a more rewarding manner.
When you’re more mindful about the way you live your life, you will become more productive when necessary, allowing you to make better use of the time that you do have.
Is it really more time you want? Do you need to get so much more done, or do you just want to be more efficient and mindful in the way you live your life? If you’re doing it for the right reasons, you can turn meditation into a daily habit.

Take Control of Your Habits and Discover How Powerful You Really Are - Jack Canfield

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

Breaking bad habits

The reality is that you – and the life you lead today – are the result of your habits. Changing habits can seem difficult to accomplish at first, but success is a result of your habits.
If you think about it, you’re living out your habits every day. From how early you get out of bed, to your morning routine, how you dress, walk, exercise, interact with others and even what you habitually think about and how you respond to the world.
These habits got you to where you are today...
The fact is that habits are necessary. They free up your mind so you can concentrate on how to survive day to day. For instance, you don't have to think about how to drive your car – which allows you instead to be on the lookout for danger while you're driving.
Unfortunately, habits can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which limit your success. Becoming successful is a result of changing habits. You’ll need to eliminate bad habits and develop new ones that are in alignment with the life you want to live.
The life you want to live won’t just materialize one day... your habits determine your outcomes!

What is Keeping You From Achieving Your Goals?

What are the habits that you live with every day that are keeping you from achieving your goals?
What habits are keeping you from achieving your goals?
I encourage you to be really honest with yourself here...
  • Are you always running late?
  • Do you forget to return phone calls within 24 hours?
  • Do you stay up late and never get enough sleep?
  • Do you often break promises to your friends and family?
  • Do you resist planning out your day?
  • Do you spend money you don’t have?
  • Do you avoid putting important tasks and events in your calendar?
  • Do you drink alcohol more than once a week – and do you have more than two drinks per day?
Imagine the Result of You Changing Habits
  • What would your life be like if you ate healthy meals, exercised and got enough sleep?
  • What if you saved your money, stopped using credit cards, and paid cash for everything?
  • What if you stopped procrastinating, overcame your fears, and began networking with people in your field?
  • What if you created a detailed annual plan for success – then chunked it down into monthly, weekly, and daily plans to ensure you stayed on track to achieving your goals?
Would your life be different if you changed your habits? I bet it would!

The 2 Steps to Changing Habits

My suggested action step for you is to write down some productive habits you could visualize, then adopt in your life. Step two is to 'act as if' you were living these new habits right now!
To help you get moving toward creating more successful habits right away, I'd like to recommend that you develop four new success habits each year, one for each quarter.
Once you determine the new habit you're ready to adopt, next you'll want to create a method that will support your new habit.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • You could write it down on a card that you keep with you and read several times a day.
  • You could make it a part of your daily visualization.
  • You could also enlist the help of an accountability partner who has habits they also want to change, or work with a personal coach who can keep you on track.

Make a 100% Commitment to You New Habit

It's important to make a 100% commitment to your new habit, so be specific about the steps that you're willing to take in order to drop an old habit and adopt a new one. Don't be vague about how you will change your habits. Spell it out for yourself so you can put yourself in situations that will motivate you to act upon your new habit.
Just developing four good habits a year will dramatically shift your life to be more in line with achieving your vision. And the more focused you are, the easier your other, not-so-good habits will be to replace. Your perspective will shift and you’ll see more clearly how your old habits just aren't serving you anymore.
Make the decision. Make the commitment. Then watch your new, positive life unfold!
I want to leave you with a bit of homework to complete after you’re done reading. Write down the four habits that you want to develop over the next year. Make a 100% commitment to each of your new habits and watch great things happen.
